Quick answer: Byzantine Rose is an Apprentice Project that combines Byzantine Chain and Flower Chain. Build one Byzantine segment of 16g/4.5mm rings, set a three-ring flower of 16g/7.0mm rings inside its last two rings, start the next segment on that flower, and repeat, ending with a Byzantine segment. Then attach the clasp at each end.

About Byzantine Rose

Byzantine Rose is an Apprentice Project. Before you start, you need to know two weaves: Byzantine Chain and Flower Chain.

Planning note (16g only): with the kit’s 16g rings, one Byzantine segment plus one flower makes about one inch of chain. Each segment uses 14 small rings (16g/4.5mm) and each flower uses 3 large rings (16g/7.0mm).

Making Byzantine Rose

Step 1. Measure

Assemble the clasp and measure its length. Subtract that from the length you want your bracelet to be. The result is how long to make your chain.

Step 2. Make the flowers

Using the 16g/7.0mm rings, make one flower for every inch of chain you need, and set them aside.

Step 3. First Byzantine segment

Using the 16g/4.5mm rings, make a Byzantine segment. Before you close the last two rings, put all three rings of a flower inside them.

Step 3: a Byzantine segment with a three-ring flower inside its last two rings
Step 3: a Byzantine segment with a three-ring flower inside its last two rings

Step 4. Start the next segment

Begin the next Byzantine segment by putting the first two rings of its 2-2-2 pattern onto the same flower. Fold and complete the segment.

Step 4: the next Byzantine segment begun on the same flower
Step 4: the next Byzantine segment begun on the same flower

Step 5. Continue

Add a new flower to the last two rings of each segment, then start the next segment on that flower.

Step 6. Finish the chain

End your chain with a Byzantine segment.

Step 7. Attach the clasp

Open the two end rings of the chain and slip a soldered ring of the clasp inside them. If only one ring fits, remove the other.

Attach the other end of the chain to the clasp the same way. The dangling rings on the clasp give you some slack: use as many as you like and clip off the rest.

Step 7: the end rings of the chain joined to the clasp ring

That’s it. Enjoy your beautiful bracelet.

FAQ

What do I need to know first?

Byzantine Chain and Flower Chain. Byzantine Rose is an Apprentice Project.

How many rings per inch?

In 16g, one Byzantine segment (14 rings of 16g/4.5mm) plus one flower (3 rings of 16g/7.0mm) makes about one inch, roughly 17 rings. Other gauges differ; use the inchpacks in the ring chart.

How do I figure out how long to make the chain?

Measure the assembled clasp and subtract its length from your planned bracelet length.

What if both end rings won’t fit on the clasp ring?

Remove one; a single ring is fine.
