Flexible rings you can actually live in

These aren't rigid bands. The Perfect Ring is flexible — it flares over the knuckle, then settles on the finger. One has been worn in place of a wedding ring most of the time for years: light enough you can't feel it, and it doesn't catch on hair.

A great gift for a crafty someone, for someone who's expecting or experiences swollen fingers for some other reason, for someone who can't wear rigid rings, or for someone who'd rather not wear their actual wedding set all the time.

Perfect Pair Kit FAQ

What is the Perfect Pair Kit?

It’s a beginner-friendly Urban Maille kit for making a matched pair of Perfect Rings (his-and-hers / promise-style bands) from the same metal. Weave knowledge required: none. The kit includes downloadable Perfect Ring / Vertebrae instructions, enough 20g and 22g rings for two rings, a Multisize Ring Sizer, and a tin gift box.

What is chainmaille?

Chainmaille is made by linking metal rings together in woven patterns. It began as armour; today it's jewelry in silver, gold, and other metals.

Can a complete beginner make these rings?

Yes. The Perfect Pair Kit is made for people who have never made chainmaille. The Perfect Ring uses the Vertebrae weave, which UM describes as easy enough for a beginner. The rings are small, so the first time can feel fiddly — take your time, and read the free Apprentice Guide on opening and closing rings if you’re new to that skill.

What’s in the box — and what else do I need?

Instructions (downloadable), rings for two Perfect Rings (20g and 22g), Multisize Ring Sizer, tin box. If you don’t already have tools, add two pairs of smooth-jawed jewelry pliers.

What sizes can I make?

The heavier 20g ring can be made up to size 15 (almost 3 inches around). The more delicate 22g ring can be made up to size 12. A Multisize Ring Sizer is included.

Are these rings flexible / good when fingers swell?

The Perfect Ring is flexible: it flares to slide over the knuckle, then settles on the finger. It conforms rather than sitting like a rigid band. It's a great gift for someone who's expecting, has swollen fingers for another reason, can't wear rigid rings, or would rather not wear their formal wedding set all the time.

Which metals can I get?

This kit is available in Sterling, Silver Filled, Yellow Gold Filled, Rose Gold Filled, Argentium, Copper, Bronze, Palladium Sterling, Platinum Sterling, and 18K Yellow Gold. Prices currently range from about $67 (Copper) to $4,188.35 (18K Yellow Gold, made to order). 18K rose and white are not offered.

How long does it take to weave one Perfect Ring?

A complete beginner can weave one ring of the pair in an evening, about 3 hours.

Why Urban Maille rings?

Gary saw-cuts every ring by hand; ends have a mirror finish so rings close without a gap or pinched edge. Coils are wound by hand in Urban Maille's shop since 2003 — nobody does it better.

Can I mix metals?

Yes. Kitpacks of different metals can be mixed and woven together in any pattern you like. Each Perfect Pair kitpack makes two rings of the same metal; buy additional metals to mix.
